$850 Million Judgment For Victims Of Syrian Terrorism
On September 29, 2021, Judge Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia held that the Syrian Arab Republic was liable to the families of five victims of ISIS terrorist attacks in the amount of $849,956,529.28. The ISIS attacks at issue were: (1) the November 9, 2015 shooting in Amman, Jordan; (2) the November 13, 2015 shooting in Paris, France; (3) the July 14, 2016 truck attack in Nice, France; and (4) the August 17, 2017 van attack in Barcelona, Spain. The Court held that Syria was responsible for these attacks because it provided material support to ISIS in the form of “personnel, training, financial resources, and a safe haven from which it could operate.”
“We’re very happy with the decision from the Court,” said Joshua D. Arisohn, one of the firm’s partners handling the matter. “This is a terrific result for our clients and we intend to track down every last cent necessary to satisfy this judgment.”
